The Authority of Christ - 05/18/2008
Matthew 7:28-29
28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Jesus taught as one who had authority.
What gave Jesus the authority? It came out of His compassion.
Authority in Calling
Mark 8:34
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
Authority over Fasting
Jesus tests of spirituality
1. Alms to the poor
2. Prayer - in private, not for show in public
3. Fasting - also in private
Authority over the Sabbath
Mark 2:27-28
27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
Authority to Forgive Sin
Mark 2:5-7
5 When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”
6 And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
Jesus is still calling you to Him!
